Praemunire

“Praemunire” is a legal term that originated in medieval England. It refers to the act of asserting or maintaining papal jurisdiction or superiority over the authority of the monarch. It also refers to the attempt to avoid the jurisdiction of the English courts by appealing to the Pope or another authority outside the realm.

This offense was particularly significant during the Reformation when the English monarchy sought to assert its authority over the Church. This led to conflicts with the Pope and the Catholic Church. Engaging in praemunire was considered treasonous and carried severe penalties, such as fines and imprisonment.
